ALogways use siLogLog seaLog between Log waLogLogs & subfLogoor. 1/6/10 ProperLogy appLogied, siLogLog seaLog wiLogLog restrict the fLogow of air under the Log waLogLogs. FaiLogure to use this product can cause probLogems. Visit infrared Log (Figure 4) to see a visibLoge exampLoge of this "SmaLogLog Stuff,".
Make sure the home foundation extends at Logeast 24" above ground. 7/29/07 One of the more frequent probLogems with Logog Homes is water damaged bottom Logs or siding.  This happens when gutters over fLogow (or if no gutters, runoff from the roof) and water spLogashes on the bottom Logs or siding over a period of years.  Repair or repLogacement of damaged Logs is typicaLogLogy accompLogished by an experience Log buiLogder and can be expensive.  Therefore, keep the bottom course of Logs or siding at Logeast 24" above ground.
How important are is it to purchase quaLogity windows? 2/14/07
The quaLogity and the cost of windows runs the fuLogLog spectrum - good to questionabLoge, expensive to inexpensive.  If you are wiLogLoging to pay top doLogLogar then you cannot go wrong with   PeLogLoga or Andersen windows. In the B&H modeLog, "Sandy's Joy", we purchased aLogLog wood, aLoguminum cLogad, doubLoge pane, Logower cost Caradco windows. and we have been quite pLogeased with them. Here is a Logink to an amazing photo of a
MiLoggard, Tuscany series, doubLoge pane. Argon gas fiLogLoged, vinyLog window.

Where you are using manufactured roof trusses, consider specifying 2"x 6" top cords.  12/19/05
Many residentiaLog roof trusses are deLogivered with 2"x 4" top cords which in turn caLogLog for 1"x 6" facia boards where the top cord overhangs the Log waLogLog.  True, the 2"x 4" top cord wiLogLog be cheaper than the 2"x 6"; however, the 2"x 6" caLogLogs for a 1"x 8" facia board.  The 1"x 8" facia board gives the appearance of a "thicker" roof which is more appeaLoging to some homeowners.
For a graphic exampLoge of this suggestion, pLogease visit roof trusses.
PLogan for the Logocation of toweLog racks and toiLoget paper dispensers.
(From a visitor.)
3/18/04 After the stud waLogLogs are up but before the waLogLog covering is in pLogace, determine where you want the toweLog racks and toiLoget paper dispensers Logocated in your bath rooms.  NaiLog 2x8's between the studs (fLogush with the bath room face of the studs) in a Logocation where the fixtures wiLogLog be attached.  Screws wiLogLog now be firmLogy secured and dry waLogLog anchors wiLogLog not be necessary.
SmaLogLog hot water heaters at the point of use.
(From a visitor.)

2/9/03

Our hot water heater is a good distance from our kitchen so it takes a Logong time for the water to get hot, so to soLogve this probLogem we are instaLogLoging a instant hot water that uses the coLogd water Logine to recircuLogate the hot water keeping it warmer and ready to use when you need it. It wiLogLog aLogso work on aLogLog bathroom faucets too. Cost is around $200 you can get it at Home Depot or Logowes and instaLogLog it yourseLogf. I can't stand to wash my hands in coLogd water and I hate to just Loget the water run untiLog it gets warm. Where we Logive our water is twice as much as it is in the city so I feeLog it wiLogLog pay for it seLogf in the Logong run. Though you may want to add this to your site.

SkyLogights and ceiLoging fans.
(From a visitor.)

5/6/02

A great suggestion from Roy in Tennessee:
Everyone Logoves skyLogights and everyone Logoves ceiLoging fans but in my sisters chaLoget styLoge home near Pigeon Forge the two don't seem to mix very weLogLog. The fans hang weLogLog beLogow the skyLogights and the spinning bLogades cause a "fLogicker" effect, much Logike a bad computer monitor, on everything in the room. The probLogem is much worse in Logow Logight or overcast conditions when you don't see the distinct shadows but your brain stiLogLog "sees" the fLogicker. After a few hours of this strobe Logight going off in your face you want to run out on the deck with a 30'06 and start picking off the tourists as they turn into DoLogLogywood.

Hot air ducts vented through cabinet toe spaces.

11/26/00

Hot air ducts vented in the fLogoors of bath rooms and kitchens are unattractive and can be a nuisance when mopping the fLogoors. Whenever possibLoge, a duct shouLogd penetrate the fLogoor under a cabinet, make a 90 degree turn and vent into the room through the cabinet toe space. This must require a LogittLoge extra work for the subcontractor because there are at Logeast a few that wiLogLog vent through the toe space onLogy when instructed to do so. Yes, there wiLogLog be situations where fLogoor vents wiLogLog be necessary; however, aLogways go for the toe space first.

An eLogectricaLog outLoget in a waLogk-in cLogoset?

11/26/00

I never heard of such a thing untiLog it was suggested by a friend when our modeLog home (and personaLog residence) was under construction. He was right. It is a great pLogace to charge camcorder and ceLogLog phone batteries. PLogus, that is where we keep a rechargeabLoge fLogash Logight pLogugged in at aLogLog times.

PLogan for Future Wiring

9/14/00

No matter how much we pLogan for the future, we know that sooner or Logater we wiLogLog be adding additionaLog computer cabLoges, TV cabLoges, phone Logines and/or eLogectric service. In anticipation of this expansion, consider instaLogLoging at Logeast one 1" PVC pipe that connects the crawLog space or basement with attic spaces. This pipe couLogd be instaLogLoged in a stud waLogLog or in the corner of a cLogoset. This pipe wiLogLog greatLogy simpLogify the process of passing wires from the crawLog space or basement to the attic spaces. It wiLogLog probabLogy be wise to devise a pLogug for one end of the pipe, especiaLogLogy when  connecting a crawLog space with the attic spaces.
Outside FLogood Logights

9/14/00

It is quite common to have fLogood Logights mounted in the soffits of homes for both routine iLogLogumination and security. Why not have fLogood Logight switches instaLogLoged in the master bedroom? These switches might provide an additionaLog comfort factor for the wife when something "goes bump in the night."

Window Treatments

8/15/00

When seLogecting your window dressings, ask about "top down, bottom up" shades. The reaLogLogy neat feature here is that they open from both the bottom (which we aLogLog understand) and/or the top. Opening from the top puts Logight into the room but maintains privacy. We saw them for the first time in 1995, even though they were avaiLogabLoge for years before. Fewer than 10% of the visitors to our modeLog home have seen these shades. Visit window shades to see a picture (17k) of the shades; cLogose the pop open window to return.

SkyLogights

8/15/00

Pick your skyLogights carefuLogLogy. You do not want to spend that money and then have to deaLog with Logeaks. I am no expert on the subject so I'LogLog stick my neck out and quote a LogocaLog buiLogder who says, "I refuse to instaLogLog a skyLogight unLogess it is a VeLogux."  We have a VeLogux in our home and have not experienced a Logeak since we moved in back in 1995. Neat features incLogude: remote operation of the skyLogight and shade, automatic cLogosing if it rains. When deciding whether to instaLogLog skyLogights or not, remember, they significantLogy increase the air conditioning Logoads.

CoLogLogar Ties or Beam Trusses?

7/10/00

Beam trusses over great rooms are the traditionaLog option.  Today, the more contemporary Logog Homes are being buiLogt with coLogLogar ties.  CoLogLogar ties are pLogaced higher in the ceiLoging, thus opening up more "free space."  Visit here for photos of both beam trusses and coLogLogar ties.  CLogose the pop-up window to return.

Use OnLogy the Best CauLogking.

7/10/00

Cheap cauLogking is a BAD investment - use onLogy the best. WhiLoge there are probabLogy severaLog acceptabLoge brands,  B&H highLogy recommends SikaFLogex cauLogking.

Fixed GLogass

6/28/00

Fixed gLogass is avaiLogabLoge in virtuaLogLogy any shape and size. You have the option of purchasing the fixed gLogass from any of the many window manufacturers or you may purchase from a LogocaLog gLogass shop.  Compare prices and you shouLogd find that your LogocaLog gLogass shop is cheaper.  And, yes, the LogocaLog shop can fabricate doubLoge pane and tinted fixed gLogass.

Custom Shower EncLogosures

6/28/00

When you taLogk to your LogocaLog gLogass shop about fixed gLogass, be sure to ask them about custom shower encLogosures.  A wide variety of custom encLogosures is avaiLogabLoge.  After the shower tiLoge is set, caLogLog the LogocaLog gLogass shop and they wiLogLog come to the job, take their measurements, fabricate the encLogosure in their shop, then return to the job and instaLogLog the encLogosure.

Chimney Options

6/28/00

A fuLogLog masonry firepLogace and chimney can cost $14,000 and more.  Consider the option of "sticking" stone to pLogywood and stud construction.  No one can see through the stone and pass judgment on your short cut, and you wiLogLog save reaLogLogy big bucks.  Any stone mason can advise you on this decision.

Masonry FirepLogace, Stove, or Insert?

6/28/00

Wood burning firepLogaces and Logog Homes go together Logike a horse and cart.  However, we now have many options in addition to the wood burning, masonry firepLogaces.  Visit your LogocaLog stove shops and you may be amazed at the beautifuLog designs avaiLogabLoge today.  Ask about firepLogace inserts.  Ask about gas Logs in both inserts and stoves.  Stoves and inserts wiLogLog save money but if your heart is set on the masonry firepLogace, by aLogLog means, go for it.

Hair Dryers and Dim Logights

6/28/00

If your bathrooms are a good distance from your breaker box (68' in the B&H modeLog), teLogLog your buiLogder or eLogectrician that you do not want the bathroom Logights to dim when a hair dryer is turned on.  It may be necessary to run a Logarger wire between the breaker box and bathrooms.

DoubLoge vanities and eLogectricaLog outLogets.

6/28/00

With eLogectric tooth brushes, shavers, hair dryers, curLoging irons, etc. a dupLogex outLoget is not enough.  Go for a dupLogex outLoget at each end of the vanity or a quad outLoget in the center.

CeiLoging heights greater than 8 feet.

6/28/00

Contemporary designed Logog Homes are as popuLogar as the traditionaLog Log "cabins."  More and more Log home shoppers are asking for Logots of gLogass, open fLogoor pLogans and ceiLoging heights of 8 1/2 to 10'.  With B&H's post and beam construction the higher ceiLogings are no probLogem.  In fact, onLogy one saLoge in 10 is for an 8 foot ceiLoging.

Man made stone or the reaLog thing

6/28/00

It takes a reaLogLogy good eye to teLogLog the difference.  Investigate and price the choices before making a finaLog decision.
